Winning Strategies for Selling Gift Certificates
According to the National Retail Federation, more than 80% of people will be giving gift cards this year. Why not jump on the band wagon and make your customers aware that your service can be offered in a gift certificate as well? Here are a few tips to getting your gift certificates in the fore front of your customers’ minds.
Remind them of the benefits. Some of the top reasons for choosing gift certificates include:
- Allows flexibility to spending an amount the gifter feels comfortable giving.
- Because it’s a service, it is a “green” gift in that it can be used without wasting resources or adding to landfill.
- Gift certificate receiver can spend the gift at a time when they need or want it most.
- Thoughtful gift that shows you want to reach out and help the gift recipient
Paint a picture. Don’t just expect them to figure out why gift certificates are a great deal. Remind them that they know people who are perfect for receiving your services. Include copy something like this, “Do you have a friend or relative that just had a baby and has her hands full? Or your friend that is going to be throwing a big party and could use some help cleaning up after her guests leave? How about that friend or relative that always compliments your clean house but may not give herself the gift of a house cleaner?” By painting a picture of how practical and appreciated the gift would be, you are helping your customers in their quest to give a thoughtful and well-meaning gift.
Create a Campaign. Whether you are promoting your gift certificates via a newsletter, a leave-behind flyer, or a social media campaign, plan out your efforts and make the campaign official. This means giving it an initial launch date, follow-up reminder, and deadline. Having a deadline creates a sense of urgency and entices people to act. You can always extend the deadline if you wish.
So before you try to sell your next gift certificate, take a step back and think though the message you want to communicate and the extra time you put into it is likely to pay off in better sales.
